Evidence -based practice is about incorporating evidence from research and making professional judgements because of the new knowledge and applying to formulate care decisions. The incorporation of evidence and knowledge into our professional decisions and in supervision by informing of what the best evidence-based practice is.
As a manager we are accountable to ensure that the staff have embraced the notion of evidence- based practice. In supervision, staff need to be informed of how they can research and review new information and should be made aware of how inquiries inform guidelines and standards.
Ethical consideration to be taken on board by the whole organisation as well as the individual because a supervisor can ensure that the members of staff are make them aware of their own responsibility to add to their own knowledge on best practise. In this way best practice can assured across the entire organisation which has shown leads to reduced incident numbers creating a safer workplace for staff and service users.
As Finkelman and Kenner (2012)explain, a supervisor should be fully aware of the content of a research, enquiry or review, especially where he/she is not involved in the research, review or enquiry processes. As Finkelman and Kenner (2012) explain, professional standards guiding health and social care practice require supervisors to always demonstrate analytical skills in evaluating and analysing research evidence and health information. Thus, a supervisor will need to critically analyse and evaluate these findings in considering their application to practice. As well, the supervisor should examine whether available resources are adequate in facilitating implementation of the findings.
During the supervision staff need to ensure that their practice is based on good, sound evidence and that they are informed as to how they might be able to improve their practice consistent with new initiatives in care.
Critical reviews like any medicine’s errors happened within our home, can be used as evidence- based practice and used as group supervision within all staff who are medicines trained. Initially, supervisor will analyse the error and made professional judgement on how and why did the incident occur? Then, we can use an ethical consideration practice by assuring staff that error can happen, and we all learn from our mistakes. Supervisor will make sure if any staff member needs further training or need update with any new knowledge. This type of supervision can be done as ‘Group clinical supervision’.
