Debate Assignment: Violent Video Games Harmful to Minors?
I agree that video games are harmful to minors who play them. Just as Leland Y. Yee and Steven F. Gruel said, there has been a lot of research done that proves that video games can cause aggressive behavior. It was found in a 2014 study which was published in “Psychology of Popular Media Culture” that 90% of pediatricians and 67% of parents agreed or strongly agreed that video games could cause violent behavior within children. There was also a joint statement that included six highly known national medical associations, the American Medical Association being one of them, which stated: “”Well over 1,000 studies – including reports from the Surgeon General’s office, the National Institute of Mental Health, and numerous studies conducted by leading figures within our medical and public health organizations – our own members – point overwhelmingly to a causal connection between media violence and aggressive behavior in some children.” This information proves that not all of the evidence against minors playing video games has been “flawed or have been discredited”, as Patricia A. Millett has claimed.
I also feel like video game playing can take over adults lives, what makes you think it’s different for children? In fact, I think it could be worse! Minors engaging in intense video game play, could cause children to be unsocial, distant, and could even cause them to be addicted to gaming themselves. “Child and adolescent brains are typically susceptible to addictions as their brains are under development till the middle 20s. Recent brain research is suggesting that any addictive behavior can harm the final stages of brain development in young adults, leaving them with a less than mature decision making system and diminished empathy for others.”
Another main reason of why I believe that video gaming is harmful to minors is because it could affect children socially. Too much video game playing could cause children to be socially isolated and they may spend less of their time doing homework or playing with friends. It has also been found by a study that academic achievement could be negatively related to over all time spent playing on video games. “A study by Argosy University’s Minnesota School on Professional Psychology found that video game addicts argue a lot with their teachers, fight a lot with their friends, and score lower grades than others who play video games less often. Other studies show that many game players routinely skip their homework to play games, and many students admitted that their video game habits are often responsible for poor school grades.”
In conclusion, I personally believe that video games can have harmful effects on children that could seriously have a big effect on them while they are children, and even when they get older.
