Behavioral management is important to have early childhood education. It is extremely important and plays a crucial role in classrooms. Behavioral management is extremely important in an early childhood setting because it helps by making sure that children and teachers are safe.

With safety behavioral management supports and promotes a structured environment that helps children with learning and discipline. Having behavioral management allows teachers to have the order in their class. Children that show behavioral problems have negative effects on themselves but have negative effects on anyone they are around, such as teachers and other children. Challenging behavior puts children for social and education failure now and later in the future.

A child with behavioral problems can affect their cognitive and emotional development. When a teacher is teaching a lesson and must stop to tend to a child that is showing challenging behavior other children in the class are affected. When lessons have to be stopped this means that the teachers’ attention is on the child that is displaying the unruly behavior. Proactive thinking with behavioral management is very crucial because it can stop many chances of any problems before they start. Getting a classroom setup with all the needed materials and getting rid of material that is unnecessary can prevent a child from wanting these things and having temper tantrums while the teacher is trying to teach a lesson. Children with problem behavior should not become defiant or disruptive when the teacher calls on them for answering questions. While thinking proactive might keep behaviors from starting, or if behavioral problems have already begun the teacher can deal with them directly before it becomes a bigger problem.

Within this paper, I will be discussing strategies that could help the teacher determine the function of behavior. I will also be designing individual support plans for examples of challenging behaviors that are most common that teacher might deal with in classrooms. Preventing challenging behavior, the teacher first needs to be able to identify what function the behavior has. There are many strategies teachers may use to find out the function of challenging behavior. An informal observation of a child’s behavior by the teacher is to find out what and how often this type of behavior is happening. While the teacher is collecting data, they will then ask the child and their parents or caregivers questions about the child environment and culture.

“Spend time working with children on behavioral problems, rather than removing them from the group or referring them to the office. The classroom Strategy Study (Brophy, 1996; Brophy &McCaslin, 1992) found that effective teachers aim for the long-term, not quick fixes.” (Kaiser 2012). Collaborative problem solving is a strategy that helps a child develop skills to refrain from displaying challenging behavior. Collaborative problem solving is both developmental discipline and the teachers’ effectiveness training to find many solutions to unwanted behavior without using punishment. The collaborative problem-solving strategy is more individualized than any other strategy, this is also is good to use for a child that may need more attention. In order for this strategy to work the teacher need to be compassionate and responsiveness to understand any and all situation from the child’s point of view.

After the teacher sees from the child’s perspective it makes it easier for the child to understand how their behavior not only affects themselves but the other children in the class. One other strategy is time out. “This actually means time out from positive reinforcement” (Kaiser ; Rasminsky, 2012). This means that the child will have to leave group activity and to be in a secluded part of the room, so they can think about their action that put them there.

If used in the correct way this could prevent aggressive behavior. Another strategy that could be used is the ABC analysis. ABC analysis stands for antecedents, behavior, and consequences. This emphasizes specific areas that need to be identified. The antecedent is the events that are present before the challenging behavior begins.

This can be caused by the transition from stations or from one subject to another. During the ABC analysis behavior is usually described by the many different antecedents. The consequences, the actions before and after the behavior and ending the challenging behavior will vary among all children. Designing the consequence for a child that is shown to correct in a positive manner is important.

Teachers may have to encounter a child having a tantrum like kicking, throwing different objects, or could even be hitting on someone or something, just because the child cannot have what it wants at that very moment. The main cause of the behavior is that the child is not getting what he/she want at the time they want it. An example would be that wanting a book when the teacher is trying to teach a lesson. First, the tantrum needs to stop, talk to the child in a normal voice, speaking to them in a way they would understand this will help get their attention a lot faster. Removing whatever the child may want from the area so that it is not in the child’s sight could help in the cause of the behavior. Once the child starts to show good behavior then the object can be brought back. This shows the child that using good behavior they will be allowed to have the object but if they start acting out the object will be removed.

As the leader of the classroom, they need to be consistent while following through with a plan. The only way a child will learn the rules of the classroom is through the teacher, the teacher will also teach them that if the rules are not followed that there will be consequences for their actions. As for the teacher, they should focus on the positive correction and reinforce replacement behavior. The child will only grow cognitively, socially, and educationally through the teacher.

While making sure that any and all behavior is assessed and corrected with a support plan will help keep the classroom safe and enjoyable environment, this will also give every child the opportunity to learn.
