EFFECTS OF OFW PARENT/S OR GUARDIAN/S ON THE SOCIAL AND OVER-ALL SCHOOL PERFORMANCE OF THEIR CHILD AS A JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT

Background of the Study
Junior High School students ranging from 12-16 years old and Senior High School students ranging from 16-18 years old are considered as adolescents. Gines, Dizon, Obias, Vendival,Jr.(1998) stated that these children entering adulthood phase and still are considered as youth age. They are at this age looking for people they could rely their trust for them to build firmness and stability in this world.
Environment has a greater influence on the student’s learning and behavior; elements (such as parents, teachers, and peers) react to the behavior of the student, they could reinforce or eliminate the student’s behavior (Skinner,1990). According to Acero, Javier, Castro (2008), parenting comprises of assisting, helping, listening, and to do something to do something to a child. Cobb (2001) stressed that the greater the number of source of protective factors (such as family, church, school), the greater the likelihood of resiliency.
At the adolescence stage according to Anonat (2009), compared to any stages is much difficult for both boys and girls to adjust for two reasons:
If the problems they met in their childhood were solved by their parents and teachers, as they mature, they probably could manage themselves somehow. ;or
Adolescent emotion or feelings that they could be independent, rejecting adults’, teachers’, or parents’ counseling and other may extend.
Lack of jobs and low salary wage here in the Philippines forces the Filipino laborers to work overseas. OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) is the term used to name all the Filipino workers abroad. Some of the in demand occupations for OFW are Healthcare Providers, Information Technology, Teachers, Engineering, Accountancy and Finance, and Human Resources (Castañeda, 2015).
Higher Income and salary, High Unemployment rate in the Philippines, and Unstable economic condition are the top three reasons of OFW’s (Natividad, 2012). According to Philippine Statistics Authority(PSA, 2018), in April to September of 2017 alone, OFW population were 2.3 million; 93% were OCW (Overseas Contract Worker) and the remaining 3% were Worked Overseas without contracts. Also there are more female OFWs (53.7%) than male OFW (46.3%).
According to (Trinity Catholic College, 2018), building an efficient partnership among parents and school could support the children in their learning and it could lead to improved and better learn results. (PBS Parents,2003) stated that parents should find a way or another to connect and attend to their children’s everyday learning.
Children from the stage of adolescence, due to the natural surge of emotions and feelings, were at the critical point of their lives. Proper foundation led by their parents or even their guardians is a must. The elders of the family, specifically the parents of the child should attend their child while they are in the point of entering the adulthood.
Every parents or even guardians want only what is the finest and the best for their children. And because of this, they are sacrificing everything to the point where they would want to go abroad to seek better opportunities and to escape poverty. Belonging to a Third World country, Filipinos were worldly renowned OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) who are mostly women, and majority of them came from a poor family and has no job.
Students with OFW parents were experiencing both negative and positive facets. As stated above, parents constant interactions and communication will help the child to have a better learning outcomes.
This research study seeks to evaluate the experience/s, thought/s, and opinion/s of the students having OFW parent/s or guardians. Also, this research paper aims provide how a student, having OFW parents/guardians, affect their over-all school performance and how they socialize in the society.
This study aims to provide both the negative and positive experiences of a student having an OFW parents.
Generally, this research aims to:
Determine the sex of the OFW parent/guardian.
Determine the positive experiences and/or thoughts of a student having an OFW parent/s.
Determine the negative experiences and/or thoughts of a student having an OFW parent/s.
Identify what is the emerging or stand out experience/s and/or thought/s of a student having an OFW parent/s (regardless of whether it’s either positive or negative, or both).
Specifically, this study aims to:
Identify the effects of having an OFW parent/s.
Determine the reactions of the students that has/have an OFW parent/s.
Determine the actions the students did to adjust themselves because of having an OFW parent.
Identify their school performance.
This study is an action research that aims to know the experience/s, thought/s, and opinion/s of the students having OFW parent/s or guardians. Also, this research paper aims provide how a student, having OFW parents/guardians, affect their over-all school performance and how they socialize in the society.
This study is both a qualitative and quantitative in nature. Qualitative Research is utilized to obtain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It is an exploratory kind of research that provides intuition into a problem or helps to develop ideas or hypothesis for potential quantitative research (DeFranzo, 2011). Quantitative Research is used to quantify the problem by means of generating numerical data or data that can be altered into usable statistics. It is used to quantify attitudes, opinions, behaviors and other defined variables – and generalize results from a larger sample population (DeFranzo, 2011). This research is qualitative in nature as it will gather the thoughts and opinions of students on having OFW parents/guardians. Meanwhile, quantitative research will be used to determine the achievements and/or school participation of a student.
